A Note on AI & Tech in Ministry

This article discusses the potential uses of AI in church contexts. It's important to note that using AI in ministry is a choice, not a necessity. Churches should prayerfully consider whether and how to implement AI, respecting diverse opinions within their congregation.Learn more.

I strongly believe that putting Jesus in a chatbot is a terrible idea. Even worse, I think it's as close to blasphemy as one can get in the digital age, a terrible witness and just flat out disrespectful to God. ๐Ÿ™…โ€โ™‚๏ธ

Very strong words, I know, but I'll explain why I feel this way in this article.

As artificial intelligence (AI) continues to advance at a rapid pace, we're seeing more and more AI chatbots that can hold surprisingly natural conversations on a wide range of topics. Naturally, this has led to a few appearances of 'Virtual Jesus' chatbots, which are designed to mimic the personality and teachings of Jesus Christ.

On the surface, this may seem like a good idea. After all, Jesus is the greatest teacher who ever lived. His words are timeless and life-changing. Why not use AI to make His wisdom more accessible to modern seekers? ๐Ÿค”

Good Question. But Jesus is not just the greatest teacher who ever lived, He is God. I'm all for using technology to make the Bible more accessible and to use tools to help us study the Bible, but I think we need to be very careful when it comes to using AI to mimic Jesus.

In this article, I'll explain why I think it's a bad idea to put Jesus in a chatbot, and why I think it's a terrible witness to the world. I'll also share some thoughts on how Christians should respond to AI chatbots in general.

๐Ÿšซ The Problem with AI Jesus Chatbots: Algorithms Have Limits

Algorithms Have Limits

"Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever." (Hebrews 13:8 ESV)

As Christians, we understand Jesus as the eternal, unchanging Son of God. His love, mercy, wisdom, and sacrifice go beyond human comprehension. But some believe that advanced AI could fully capture the person and work of Jesus. I used to be enthralled by this idea myself.

As a software developer and creator of the FaithGPT Bible study app, I'm enthusiastic about the potential of technology. But over time, I've gained a more nuanced view. While algorithms may mimic certain aspects of Jesus, reducing Him to AI fundamentally limits who He is. Here are three key reasons why:

1. ๐Ÿ‘ซ Jesus is Relational, Not Transactional

AI systems excel at transactional operations - identifying patterns in data and responding based on programmed rules. But a relationship with Jesus is anything but transactional!

Jesus doesn't just analyze our inputs and produce formulaic outputs. He personally knows and loves us (John 10:14). With compassion, He meets us in our specific life circumstances. An algoritm can't do that.

2. ๐Ÿ”ฅ Jesus Transforms Us. AI Lacks His Divine Power

Through His Word and Spirit, Jesus transforms believers into His image (2 Corinthians 3:18). This sanctifying work reaches the deepest parts of our identity.

AI has no such agency or power. It merely optimizes outputs based on datasets. Becoming like Jesus is not about maximizing performance metrics. It's about holistic renewal at the very core of who we are.

3. ๐Ÿ‘‘ Jesus is Divine, Not Man-Made

The Bible teaches that Jesus is God in the flesh (John 1:14). As the Son of God, He has authority over all creation (Matthew 28:18). No human invention compares.

We must remember that AI has human designers, with human limitations. While beneficial, AI will never rise above its earthly origins. Only Jesus is divine.

๐Ÿ“– The Crucial Foundations of Faith, AI Can't Replace

the crucial foundations of faith ai can't replace

As the eternal Son of God, Jesus is infinitely greater than any AI system. There are key foundations of Christian faith that algorithms simply can't replicate or replace:

1. ๐Ÿ’ซ Divine Revelation

Our knowledge of Jesus comes through divine revelation. The prophets, apostles, and authors of Scripture were inspired by the Holy Spirit (2 Timothy 3:16-17). In contrast, AI learns by mining human datasets - not divine wisdom.

2. ๐Ÿ‘ฃ The Incarnation

Central to Christianity is Christ's incarnation. Jesus is the Word who became flesh (John 1:14). He entered into human experience and made God known to us. An algorithm can't become human or mediate God's revelation.

3. โœ๏ธ Atonement & Resurrection

Jesus' miraculous birth, sinless life, atoning death, and resurrection are cornerstones of the Gospel. Through faith in Him, our sins are forgiven! An algorithm is incapable of substituting for the historical, literal Jesus.

4. ๐Ÿ•Š๏ธ The Indwelling Spirit

When we trust in Christ, the Holy Spirit comes to dwell within us (Romans 8:9-11), producing spiritual fruit (Galatians 5:22-23). An algorithm can't replicate the Spirit's inner work of transformation.

5. ๐ŸŒณ Union with Christ

Believers are united to Jesus in His death and resurrection (Romans 6:5). This spiritual union gives us new life! We're adopted as God's children. An algorithm can't join us to Christ or make us new creations.

6. ๐Ÿ• The Church

Jesus builds His church (Matthew 16:18), composed of all true believers. As Christians, our identity is shaped by baptism and participation in the body of Christ. An AI "church" is no church at all.

As this small sampling shows, AI is utterly unable to replace the theological foundations of Christian faith. The person of Jesus and the Gospel message stand apart. ๐Ÿ™Œ

๐Ÿ“ข Guidance: How Should Christians Respond?

diverse group of christians praying

So where does this leave us? As followers of Jesus, how should we approach innovations like AI algorithms? Here is some guidance:

  • โ›”๏ธ Avoid idolizing AI. Remember that human technology has limits. Don't elevate it above its proper place.

  • ๐Ÿšซ Don't be over-reliant on AI. Don't let AI replace your relationship with Jesus or your dependence on the Holy Spirit.

  • ๐Ÿ™…โ€โ™‚๏ธ Don't fear AI. AI is a tool, not a threat. It can be used for good or evil. Trust in God's sovereignty.

  • ๐Ÿ” Be discerning. Test bold AI claims against the truth of God's Word (Acts 17:11). Sift possible hypes and exaggerations.

  • โ“ Ask probing questions. How is this particular AI model limited? What biases or flaws might it have? What purposes will it really be used for?

  • โš–๏ธ Consider ethics. Advocate for the ethical use of AI - particularly when it involves spiritual matters.

  • ๐Ÿ‘€ Focus on Christ. No matter how advanced technology becomes, keep your eyes fixed on Jesus. He alone is perfect, divine, and eternal.

  • ๐Ÿงพ Be thoughtful stewards. God calls us to exercise wisdom and care in how we use His good gifts like AI (Matthew 25:14-30).

  • ๐Ÿ“– Stay grounded in Scripture and community. Evaluate AI in light of God's Word. Discuss AI technologies with mature believers.

  • ๐Ÿ™ Move forward in hope. Be faithful to Christ, knowing that He holds the future. His purposes will be accomplished!

The stunning advancements of artificial intelligence present new opportunities along with new perils. As Christians, we can't ignore this defining technology of our age. My hope is that the perspective shared here will help believers navigate the AI landscape with theological depth, discerning caution, and Christ-centered hope.

๐Ÿ•ฐ๏ธ Jesus in the Age of Intelligent Machines

What will the continuing progression of AI mean for followers of Jesus? This monumental question touches on themes I've explored in depth throughout this article. To conclude, here are my top three convictions when it comes to living out Christian faith in a world of intelligent algorithms:

1. ๐Ÿ™Œ Honor the Author of intelligence

Advanced AI amazes us with its superhuman capacities. AGI or ASI - if we achieve either, that's amazing. This can only lead those who are honest to look beyond the brilliance of our mind's creations - and praise the Author of all intelligence - the One who fashioned our minds and who set the stars in their courses. As the psalmist proclaimed, "Great is our Lord, and abundant in power" (Psalm 147:5). May AI lead us to stand in awe of the Lord!

2. ๐Ÿ’ž Express Christ's love tangibly

Even as technology evolves, human beings still yearn for genuine connection and compassionate care. The Church has a tremendous opportunity. Will we choose to be God's heart, hands, and voice to a struggling, high-tech world - extending Jesus' touch to the lonely, marginalized, and oppressed? May Christian community and service shine brightly amidst the artificial intelligence explosion. ๐Ÿ’ซ

3. ๐Ÿ“œ Anchor in the Word of Life

No matter what lies ahead, Christ's eternal Gospel remains true. His Word stands firmly fixed, bringing salvation, purpose, and guidance in every age. By God's grace, the technological upheaval of coming decades will only make Scripture all the more precious. May the encouragement of Psalm 119:89 sustain us: "Forever, O Lord, your word is firmly fixed in the heavens." ๐Ÿ“–

๐Ÿ”Š Jesus Remains Present and actively Speaking

More importantly, as Christians we believe that Jesus continues guiding us in the here and now through the Holy Spirit. He remains a living, responsive presence seeking intimate relationships with each of us. Jesus is not a static figure of the past, but a dynamic, active Lord.

Jesus is not a static figure of the past, but a living, active and present Lord. ๐Ÿ”ฅ

Unlike long-departed human teachers and historical figures, Jesus actively communicates His divine revelations tailored to each individual. His sheep "know his voice" through the Holy Spirit's movements. No AI chatbot, however slick, can substitute for a real relationship with the risen Christ. They are all lacking the nuanced wisdom Jesus shares with open hearts.

Seeking spiritual conversations through an AI bot rather than Jesus' Spirit implies he has grown silent or inaccessible. But Scripture promises his guidance to all who earnestly seek it. If we feel distant from Jesus' voice, the solution is spiritual disciplines like prayer, meditation and charity - not relying on tech workarounds. AI cannot replace a living connection with God.

Jesus is More than Enough ๐Ÿ’ฏ

At its root, the impulse behind AI avatars of Jesus represents a tragic lack of trust in Christ's ongoing relevance and sufficiency.

It suggests we must artificially augment and update Jesus to make him "relatable" to modern seekers. But Scripture declares Jesus as the same yesterday, today and forever - his words never fade in relevance or power.

Rather than desperately forcing Jesus into trendy new mediums, we should boldly proclaim his unchanged sufficiency for all peoples in all times. Even after 2000 years, nothing needs to be added to the timeless potency of the gospel.

Jesus alone provides the living water that never runs dry. He needs no AI intermediaries - just hearts willing to encounter him afresh today.

Chatbots may aim to make spiritual wisdom more accessible. But they dilute the infinitely rich substance of Christ into artificial shadows.

Let us treasure the beautiful gospel paradox - that nothing man creates could ever add to the fullness available in Jesus. And no technology can reproduce the intimate grace he lavishes on those who simply come to him in humility and faith.

For in the end, Jesus does not need AI to be introduced to new generations - if we walk faithfully with him, he is more than able to reveal himself to hungry hearts. ๐Ÿ”ฅ

FaithGPT is committed to honoring Christ and will NEVER host any chatbots that try to mimic Jesus. That said, we are open to hosting chatbots that mimic other historical figures, such as the apostle Paul, Peter, other Biblical figures, and christian historical figures.
