A Note on AI & Tech in Ministry

This article discusses the potential uses of AI in church contexts. It's important to note that using AI in ministry is a choice, not a necessity. Churches should prayerfully consider whether and how to implement AI, respecting diverse opinions within their congregation.Learn more.

Introduction: A Christian's Compass in the Digital Age

The digital age presents both promise and peril, especially as it intersects with matters of faith. As a software developer and a devout Christian, I stand at this crossroads, keenly aware of the implications that AI (and technology in general) has for our spiritual lives.

This article proposes guiding principles for Christians to navigate the brave new world of AI, illuminating paths that maintain fidelity to our faith while embracing the potential of technology. Of course, these principles are not exhaustive, nor are they intended to be prescriptive. Rather, they are offered as a starting point for a conversation that is both timely and necessary.

Also, goes without saying, but these guiding principles apply to all our interactions with technology, not just AI.

Section 1: Engaging AI Through the Lens of Faith

In a landscape increasingly shaped by digital technology, Christians must discern how best to engage with AI. This is not a call to shun technology but to approach it with a Christ-centered framework. The following principles are offered as a starting point for this journey.

Principle #1: AI as a Tool for Scripture Illumination

AI, when used responsibly, can offer insights into the historical and cultural contexts of the Bible, bringing to light nuances that might otherwise go unnoticed. However, it must be emphasized that AI serves as a supplement, not a substitute for the Holy Spirit's teaching through Scripture.

"All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness" (2 Timothy 3:16).

Thus, while tools like FaithGPT can be beneficial, they must never replace personal engagement with the Word of God. As the Psalmist declares, the Word of God illuminates our path. While AI can offer supplementary insights, they should never replace our primary engagement with Scripture as the Holy Spirit remains our foremost guide in deciphering God's messages.

Principle #2: Embracing AI use with Moderation

"But the wisdom from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, open to reason, full of mercy and good fruits, impartial and sincere." - James 3:17

AI offers vast knowledge, but wisdom in its application is crucial. The goal is not to overshadow the profound, transformative power of Scripture but to use AI as a discovery tool that complements our spiritual journey.

As with all good things, moderation is key. Over-reliance on AI risks diminishing the transformative power of direct engagement with Scripture. We must use AI judiciously, ensuring it serves to enhance rather than replace the relational, meditative practices of faith.

Principle #3: Using AI to Glorify God

Incorporating AI into Christian life, our guiding star should be to honor God through it. Imagine AI as a supportive companion in our journey of faith - a tool that helps us dig deeper into the Bible, understand its teachings, and perhaps even share a Bible verse that speaks to our hearts in a moment of need.

But, let’s be clear - AI doesn't replace the personal touch of the Holy Spirit or the irreplaceable value of human fellowship. Instead, it's there to back us up, to give us another way to look at the timeless stories and commandments we live by. By offering scriptural insights and historical contexts, AI can help us see the beauty of God's word in fresh light, serving as a digital aid that points us back to the eternal wisdom of the Lord.

Principle #4: Employing AI to Bless humans

With great power comes great responsibility. It's paramount that AI is leveraged to bless humans. Offering insights and understanding is only part of the equation. Just like any other tool out there, they're designed to help make life easier for us. What does this look like?

For Christians, employing AI to bless humans means that we use these tools to further the mission of the Church and individual believers to serve others. This could manifest in AI-driven programs that assist with disaster relief, software that aids in the fight against human trafficking, or virtual platforms that offer spiritual guidance and counseling.

By aligning AI with Christian ministry, we ensure that it doesn't just make life more convenient, but that it echoes the heart of the Gospel—serving the least of these, uplifting the downtrodden, and spreading hope. In every algorithm and line of code, the potential to reflect God's grace and mercy should be recognized and pursued.

Principle #5: AI Advocacy for the Weak and Vulnerable

In accordance with the scriptural call to protect and serve "the least of these" (Matthew 25:40), our use of AI must intentionally consider and address the needs of the most vulnerable among us. This includes a focus on safeguarding children, providing assistive technologies for the elderly, and enhancing the quality of life for those with physical challenges. For children, AI can be a tool for safe, age-appropriate educational content that engages and nurtures their growing minds in alignment with Christian values.

For the elderly, AI can offer companionship (I'm thinking those with mobility restrictions, not as a replacement for fellowship), monitor health, and ensure they remain connected to their communities and their faith. And for individuals with physical needs, AI can break down barriers to access, offering new ways to participate in worship, study, and fellowship. In these ways, AI becomes not just a technological advancement, but a means of grace, reflecting the inclusive heart of the Gospel.

Section 2: Reflecting Christ in Our Digital Interactions

It's not only about the principles we hold but also how we embody them in our interactions with AI and within digital communities.

Principle #6: Upholding the value of God-given Wisdom

In the Christian tradition, wisdom is a gift from God, highly esteemed and sought after, as described in Proverbs 2:6: "For the Lord gives wisdom; from his mouth come knowledge and understanding." This principle emphasizes the importance of valuing human wisdom and discernment over AI-generated content. It advocates for using AI as a tool to assist in our quest for knowledge while recognizing that true wisdom comes from God and the lived experiences of His people.

AI should enhance our capacity to apply God's wisdom in complex situations, rather than attempting to replace the uniquely human insight granted by Divine Providence. AI is not your pastor, and it should not be treated as such.

Principle #7: Promoting Biblical Literacy Through AI

While AI can assist in bringing clarity to complex theological concepts, its role should ultimately point back to Scripture. AI can be programmed to promote biblical literacy, but it should encourage users to verify insights through personal Bible study and community discourse.

Principle #8: Guarding Against AI Idolatry

With the sophistication of AI, there's a temptation for some to attribute to it an authority it doesn't possess. We must guard against making an idol of tools and technology, remembering that AI does not possess divinity; it is a creation of human ingenuity that must remain subordinate to God's wisdom.

I feel the need to mention AI companions here. While they might seem harmless on the surface, a Christian should be wary of using them as a replacement for human companionship. AI companions are not human (nor do they accurately depict what a real life relationship is like), and they cannot offer the same level of emotional support that a human can. A toaster with lady parts is still a toaster.

Principle #9: Fostering Authentic Community in a Digital Realm

AI can connect us across vast distances, but it should not replace the fellowship found in a physical church community. It's important to balance our online engagements with in-person relationships that are vital to Christian living. Our communication with and through AI should be a reflection of Christ's love and grace.

Whether we're interacting with an AI system or using it to communicate with others, our words and actions should be guided by the biblical mandate to "speak the truth in love" (Ephesians 4:15). This principle calls for our digital presence to be consistent with our faith, demonstrating the fruits of the Spirit in all online engagements.

Principle #10: Advocating for Ethical AI Development

As a Christian in the field of AI development, there's an obligation to advocate for and practice ethical AI development. This includes transparency, fairness, and a commitment to avoiding bias that can misrepresent God's truth or harm individuals.

Section 3: Looking to the Future with hope

Our journey with AI as Christians must be navigated with prayerful wisdom and an eye towards the future, filled with hope not fear. God did indeed promise us that He will be with us always, even to the end of the age (Matthew 28:20) and that all things work together for good for those who love God (Romans 8:28).

Principle #11: Continuous Learning and Vigilance

In the ever-evolving field of AI, we must commit to continuous learning and vigilance, ensuring that our use and understanding of the technology remain current and responsible. This includes staying abreast of the latest developments in AI and its applications (come back often for more information), as well as engaging in ongoing dialogue with other Christians about the implications of AI for our faith.

This also includes being vigilant about the potential for AI to be used for evil purposes, such as spreading misinformation (images, audio and video can be easily altered - so be slow to believe what you see, hear or read online) or promoting hate speech.

Principle #12: Preparing for AI's Impact on Future Generations

The implications of AI for future generations are profound. We must consider the long-term consequences of our engagement with AI, preparing the next generation for a world where AI will be even more integrated into daily life. This includes equipping them with the tools to discern truth from falsehood and how to use AI responsibly.

For the Christian context, this includes making sure our technology tools we build have some sort of verification mechanism to ensure that the AI is not misrepresenting God's truth. Here at FaithGPT, we make sure all responses are theologically accurate as well as show Bible verses (Bible Book, chapter, verse and text) that support the response.

Conclusion: A Balanced Embrace

As we harness the capabilities of AI, we must do so with a balanced embrace - holding tightly to our faith while cautiously extending our hand to the digital future. In doing so, we reflect the God who is not only the God of the past and present but of the future as well. God did indeed create the world and us humans, giving us the ability to create AI. Just like at the dawn of the digital age, we must realize and be aware that AI has the potential to be used for ooth good and evil. We must be vigilant and use AI responsibly, ensuring that it is used to glorify God and bless others.
